Kochi: The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed concern over the arrest of Fr. Stan Swamy who was alleged that he was involved in the Bhima koregaon incident, by the National Investigation Agency from his residence in the middle of the night. Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church and KCBC President, has asked the Central Government to release Fr. Stan Swamy from jail immediately and send him back to his residence.

According to available reports, Fr. Stan Swamy had been active among the adivasis for a few decades. He strengthened the rights of the adivasis, especially through their interventions, to protect and stand up for their rights to land. His actions were against the vested interests of some of the individuals there.

The cardinal called on the central government to take necessary steps to protect the rights, responsibilities and benefits of all sections of the people of the country and to maintain peace and unity among all.
