St. Michael Church, popularly known as Mahim Church, is set to become India’ s first carbon neutral church.  The church’s decision will find its fruits in the next two years.  This decision by the church is in line with BMC’ s Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP) to make the city carbon neutral by 2050.
Carbon neutrality involved the calculation of the church’s carbon footprint and finding the ways to make the footprint zero.  The church had incorporated six environmental initiatives in 2018- solar panels, solar water heaters, energy efficient lights and fans, composting organic waste, biogas from flower waste, and greening the church area.
Along with the church, several corporates like Tata Consultancy Services, Reliance as well as the Indian Railways have hoped to become carbon neutral by 2030 and 2035.
