Marking the centenary of Romero’s birth at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles, His Excellency Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, conveyed the significance of the day to reflect on the martyred Salvadoran Bishop Blessed Oscar Romero’s virtue and how his vision can be made a reality today on his 100th birthday celebration Mass, on 13th August, 2017.

As reported by Catholic News Agency, His Grace Archbishop Gomez remarked that “One hundred years after his birth, Bl. Oscar Romero still inspires us for his humility and courage – for his love for the poor and his witness of solidarity and service to others, even to the point of laying down his life.” Further, His Excellency added, “Our brother Bl. Oscar , had a vision for a new society- the society that God wants- a society in which God’s gifts are shared by everyone, and not only a few and so we want to carry that vision forward in our times and in our own society.”

Bl. Oscar Romero preached the importance of Christian love in the amid El Salvador’s bloody civil war and was a strong critic of government violence against the poor, human rights violation and corruption, despite many threats. Bl. Romero was assassinated on March 24, 1980, for which Right-wing death squads are suspected.  Pope Francis declared him a martyr in February 2015 then beatified him in May 2015.
