KOCHI: The KCBC Education Commission and the Catholic Teachers Guild have announced that they will not cooperate with the Mathematics Program organized by the Department of Public Instruction for students of grades 6, 7 and 8 in more than 1,000 schools across the state. KCBC Education Commission secretary Fr. Jose Karivelikal, Teachers Guild President Salu Pathalil and General Secretary Joshi Vadakkan said.

The math festival, which was supposed to be held on Sunday, December 22, was postponed due to strong protests. The announcement comes just days after the director of public education announced that the event would be held on Sunday, January 19. The KCBC Education Commission alleges that in recent years, Sundays have been organized into an undeclared workday. The national merit-cum-exams, state work experience, athletic events, IT at school training, Sea Mat training for Headmasters and KET exams were conducted on Sundays.

For Christians, the government must shy away from such activities that are interfering with Sunday religious instruction and worship services. The matter was referred to the Education Minister in December. The office bearers also accused the minority community of continuing to pursue unilateral Sunday training.
