A Kolkata court sentenced a Bangladeshi man to imprisonment till death for raping a 71-yr old nun during a dacoity at a convent in West Bengal’s Ranaghat town on March 14, 2015. Nazrul Islam, a 30-yr old Bangladeshi national, will spend the rest of his life in jail and was convicted on November 7, 2017. The court said that they committed the ‘heinous’ crime of vandalizing a place of worship and committing sexual atrocities on an aged nun at the Jesus and Mary Convent at Ranaghat in Nadia district in 2015.

As reported by ucanews.com,  Sr. Monica Joseph,  superior general of the Congregation remarked that “It is a red letter day because justice has been  meted out and the culprits have been  punished.” Quoting from Oscar Wilde’s “The Selfish Giant”, the judge said “Jesus Christ, in the guise of a child, had told the giant that these are wounds of love, when inquired about nail-inflicted wounds on his palm and feet, but, in this case, these are not the wounds of love and the convicts do not deserve mercy.”

Church people see the verdict as being relatively fast. India records thousands of rapes each year. In 2016, there were 34, 561 cases, according to official documents and most cases drag on in the courts for years.
