Calcutta: Members of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa in various parts of the densely populated city of Kolkata are conducting charitable works. The monk community has helped 40,000 poor families who lost their jobs and wages as food packages and food items due to a lockdown announced by the central government since March 24. More food packages were distributed in the Howrah region, where the poorest people live. Many of these are migrant workers.

Since the start of the lockdown, the nuns have been delivering food packages in various slums. Kits are being distributed to people, including rice, wheat, sugar, pulses, and cereals. The ambulance is also equipped to accommodate the poor, while the monks are equipped for the poor. Sister Mary Prema, the head of the monastery, is directly leading the charge. Police help and cooperate with nuns, both day and night.

Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, praising the saints, said that delivering food packages to the poor in Howrah was a great blessing to the poor. He added that the first priority these days is to help the poor, the refugees, and the unemployed.

The Archbishop of the Archdiocese, Fr. Gomez smiled at Dominic. He added that they are doing a great humanitarian service for the ignorant of society. In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. Today, there are over five thousand nuns serving under the Congregation worldwide.
