Kochi: Sahrida, the social service arm of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, has formed a special team to assist in funerals during the COVID 19 pandemic. The group, called ‘Sahridaya Samaritans’, includes priests and young volunteers. According to the COVID protocol, the crew can help in the cremation process. The director of Sahrada, Fr. Jose Koluthuvallil, formed the team.

They have also been trained under the leadership of government health workers associated with COVID. The funeral of Jason Varunni, who was diagnosed with COVID disease after his death at St. Peter & Paul Church, Thaikattukara, Aluva on Sunday, July 19, was conducted by Vicar Rev. Fr. Jimmichan Kakkattuchira, Vicar of St. Dominic’s Church, Aluva. In the presence of Fr. Varghese Pottakkalan and some other priests, the cremation was conducted with the prayer service to St. Peter the Apostle. Volunteers from the Friendly Samaritans were also present to assist with the burial.

Anyone who is healthy can engage in such volunteering if arrangements and precautions are taken in accordance with the Covid-19 protocol, Fr. Jose said. A similar group was formed in Idukki diocese yesterday.
