Despite the widespread propaganda and slander against monks and nuns, the youth of today are entering the monastery with the zeal of faith that strives in them. The biggest evidence of this is Dr. Deena Anna Jacob, a nun in the Sisters of Destiny’s congregation. Deena Jacob has just entered the monastic life, after MBBS and House Surgeoncy.

Deena is the second of three children of Jacob and Jomol from Nalpuraparambu in Chandranagar parish in Palakkad diocese. She completed her MBBS from Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences Medical College, Karnataka. But her desire for ascetic life was already numbered in her mind. When she informed her parents of her desire to become a Sister, they first tried to reverse the decision. But when she was firm in her decision, she said they were ready to give her full support.

As monastic clergy go through challenges and crises, Deanna’s call to God is no less inspiring to young people. Deena is currently in her second year of study at the Church of the Needy. The first vows will be held next year. Deena says that Mother Teresa, the mother of the poor, and Albert Schweitzer’s life in Africa, inspired her to enter the monastic life. It is also a reply to those who are trying to dissuade those who have entered the ascetic life by pointing out isolated incidents in the general society.
