WCC and its members on the Korean Peninsula are backing and joining prayer campaigns in support of the April 27 summit between the two Koreas, as well as a possible first summit between North Korea and the United States. The National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) has called on Christians around the world to pray for a successful outcome. The NCCK has asked the people to say a prayer for peace every day at noon for one minute until Friday’s summit, the first in more than a decade.
As reported by en.vaticannews.va, WCC General Secretary Olav Fykse Tveit in a statement remarked that “The World Council of Churches (WCC) welcomes the recent initiatives to establish a meaningful and constructive dialogue between the United States of America and North Korea.”
Progress on the nuclear front between the Koreas is seen as a possible way for a possible first summit between North Korea and the United States, a prospect greatly welcomed by the Geneva-based World Council of Churches. The CBCK’s Commission for the Reconciliation of the Korean People is encouraging everyone to pray, and recite an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Gloria every evening, for the success of the upcoming summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Panmunjom, on 27 April.
