Beirut: Christians are hopeful that a new government will take over Lebanon, which was once the largest Christian majority country in the Middle East. Sadd Hariri-led government is preparing to take over in Lebanon, which resigned three months ago. Of the 19 members of the Cabinet, 10 are ministers. Of these, four are members of the Maronite Church, three are Greek Orthodox, two are Greek Catholic and one is an Armenian. The new government is headed by Hasan Diabah, a former professor at the American University of Beirut and a Sunni Islamist.

The announcement was made last Tuesday amid months of uncertainty. The new government will seek a vote of confidence in parliament next week. They hope to win the confidence vote because they are a coalition government. Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai, head of the Maronite Church, urged the people to give the new government a chance. The head of government in Lebanon, which has many religious denominations, is supposed to be Sunni. The presidency of Parliament has long been given to Shia Muslims and the country’s presidency as a Maronite clan.
