Changanassery: Fighting for the rights of the adivasis, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Changanassery Mar Thomas Tharayil expressed deep concern over the arrest of Stan Swamy on treason charges. He responded by posting on Facebook, “We are silent even when freedom is in danger.” The bishop said on Facebook that he was concerned about the future of independent India and that it was not a military rule or a dictatorship to silence and intimidate.

Excerpts from the text:

Fighting for the rights of the adivasis, Fr. Stan Swamy was arrested on treason charges. Strongly condemned. At the same time, there are concerns about the course of independent India. Catholic priests working for the poor have been persecuted for alleged proselytizing. Treason is easy for the rulers as it is a department that does not even get bail. It is surprising to remember that this is neither military rule nor dictatorship to intimidate and silence. India’s democracy is in danger.

In the past, Winston Churchill scoffed when he said that democracy would not succeed in India. But one thing is certain today. People who are ignorant of their own rights cannot even distinguish between democracy and dictatorship. Fr. Praying for Stan Swamy and his tribal brothers
