His Eminence Cardinal George Alencherry, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, led a Holy Mass for the hard of hearing on September 11, 2017, with the help of priests and nuns who were trained in sign language. Around 200 faithful attended the Holy Mass at the church’s headquarters in Kochi and the faithful with hearing difficulties from all 15 dioceses in Kerala attended the program.

As reported by ucanews.com, His Lordship Cardinal Alencherry remarked that “All the diocese will arrange Holy Mass for you, whenever you need.” Further, His Eminence added, “The church is realizing the increasing need for pastoral care for physically challenged people; other sacraments including confession will also be administered in sign language.”

As the Cardinal celebrated the Holy Mass, a priest and a nun trained in sign language stood behind him in the altar communicating the prayers to the faithful and they responded to the prayers in sign language. The Eastern Church’s synod has now decided to have such services in all its 33dioceses across India.
