Holy Father Pope Francis expressed his heartfelt condolences on the death of His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop Emeritus of Westminster, through a telegramme which was sent to His Lordship Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster. His Holiness remembered the far sighted commitment of Cardinal Murphy to the advancement of ecumenical and interreligious understanding.

As reported by Vatican News, Holy Father Pope Francis recalled that “With immense gratitude the late Cardinal’s distinguished service to the Church in England and Wales, his unwavering devotion to the preaching of the Gospel and the care of the poor.”

His Lordship Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor had been seriously ill in hospital with cancer since April 2017 and was called to eternal rest on 1st September, 2017, at the age of 85.
