Rome: Rev. Fr. Robert Thomas Puthussery was elected the General Counsellor of the Universal Order of the Carmelites on 18th September, 2019. Son of Lt. Ousep and Lt. Evuprasia, Rev. Pudussery was ordained the GC of the Asia-Oceania-Australia sectors. This is the first time in history that a Keralite priest of the congregation is heading the Order that was founded in the 12th century. The election adopted furthermore priests as the General Counselors of other sectors like Europe, America, Africa and so on. In the election that occurred in Rome, Rev. Fr. Michael O’neill was appointed the deputy chief of Rev. Dr. Pudussery.

Rev. Pudussery was earlier elected the Provincial of St. Thomas Province of India. Following the exit from office, he was serving as the Manager and Academic Chairman of Mount Carmel College in Kothamangalam. He belongs to the Mookkannur, Angamaly, under the Archdiocese of Ernakulam.
