Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) congratulated and appreciated Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, the newly elected President of India, through a press release which was released on 20th July, 2017.   The press release focused on encouraging the new President to work for the good of the country by guiding India towards peace, development and justice for all people without being biased and also assured him with prayers and support from CBCI.

His Excellency Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, secretary general of CBCI, highlighted that “We pray that God may assist Mr. Ram Nath Kovind as per Oath of Office and he will strive to the best of his ability to preserve, protect, defend the Constitution and the law and also will devote himself to the service and well-being of the people of the Republic of India.”

Mr. Ram Nath Kovind is the 14th President-Elect of the Republic of India and was a former leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and fought for Dalits’ rights and issues.   Kovind won the Indian presidential election against Meira Kumar, with 65.65% of the total votes and will take over the position as the President of India officially on 25th July, 2017.
