Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council is expected to launch an agitation against the State’s liquor policy which stated to reduce the distance of bars functioning in hotels from educational institutions and places of worship. The Catholic Churches in the State warned the state government and urged them to correct the policy that supports the availability and use of alcohol.

As reported by ucanindia.in, His Eminence Cardinal George Alencherry, head of the Syro Malabar Church, remarked that “The government decision to reduce the distance of bars functioning in hotels from educational institutions and places of worship to 50 meters from the existing 200 meters was a deviation from the government policy.” Further, His Lordship added, “The Church will protest against the policy through democratic ways and the Church is of the view that the minimum distance should be more than 200 meters.”

The Bishops’ Council has scheduled a meeting in Kottayam for September 15, 2017, as a part of agitation.
